Written by on February 15, 2024

Racheal Kundananji, the talented Zambian forward, has made history by becoming the most expensive female transfer in football, joining Bay FC from Madrid CFF in a groundbreaking move. The transfer fee of €735,000 (£685,000), with potential add-ons of $75,000, surpasses the previous record set by Mayra Ramirez’s €500,000 move to Chelsea from Levante. Kundananji’s exceptional skills and goal-scoring prowess, demonstrated by her impressive record of 35 goals in 46 games for Madrid, have earned her a four-year contract with Bay FC in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL).

Despite being only 23 years old, Kundananji has already made significant strides in her career, starting with her tenure at Zambian side Indeni Roses before moving to BIIK Kazygurt in Kazakhstan in 2019. Her standout performances in the Women’s Champions League caught the attention of Spanish top-flight club Eibar, where she further showcased her talent with eight league goals in her sole season. Her subsequent move to Madrid CFF saw her excel even further, contributing 25 goals to secure a fifth-placed finish, the club’s best in history.

Beyond her club success, Kundananji has also made a mark on the international stage, representing Zambia at the 2023 Women’s World Cup and boasting an impressive record of 10 goals in 18 games for her country. Her journey from humble beginnings to becoming a global football sensation serves as an inspiration to aspiring female athletes not only in Zambia but across Africa.

Bay FC’s bold move to secure Kundananji’s services underscores their commitment to elevating women’s football and competing at the highest level. Supported by Sixth Street Partners, as well as influential figures such as Staci Slaughter, Sheryl Sandberg, and Rick Welts, Bay FC aims to make a statement in the NWSL with Kundananji leading their attacking lineup.

In welcoming Kundananji to Bay FC, General Manager Lucy Rushton praised her as a “tremendous talent” with exceptional attacking abilities and expressed confidence in her ability to thrive at the club. Austin Buchanan, Bay’s Director of Scouting, emphasized the significance of Kundananji’s arrival, highlighting the club’s dedication to raising the bar in women’s sports.

As the NWSL season approaches, all eyes will be on Kundananji as she embarks on this new chapter of her career with Bay FC. Her success story serves as a beacon of hope and empowerment for young girls dreaming of making their mark in the world of football.
